Author of several edu-enlightening books, Melvia expresses her hopes for a better, healthier, more peaceful world. Her book: EBONY & IVORY is a collection of unique stories on important issues and contains the famous epic poem story--"New & Different Friends." The author is a graduate of Ball State University and the University of Michigan. She holds several advanced college degrees and has received numerous scholarships, awards, and honors. She has worked as a manager for major corporations, such as Chrysler and AT& T. And, her professional experiences also include being an instructor at several colleges and universities.
Melvia has appeared on several TV and radio shows as a guest, discussing her books and work in the area of Cultural Diversity and Wholistic Education (Edu-tainment). She has received numerous honors and awards, including being named: "Young Professional Woman of the Year"--by NANBPW, Inc.---and being named to "Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges." She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Public Service Sorority.
She has creates interesting way of teaching... She calls her methodology: EDUTAINMENT-- which is a form of entertaining education.

A TRUE STORY FROM THIS AUTHOR:
Not long ago, I was invited to give a presentation for a "Multi-Cultural Club" at Eastern Mich. Univ. When I arrived at the auditorium where the workshop was taking place, a group of college students gave me a seat on stage with other panelists ---Orientals, Arabs, Native Americans, etc.---who would be speaking. I was the last presenter to speak. I began my talk with questions:
1 --- Who invented the traffic light signal ?
2--- Who invented the printing press?
3--- Who invented air conditioners?
4--- Who invented the first American clock?
... AND TO MY DISAPPOINTMENT AND DISMAY--- although there was an auditorium filled with at least 400 college students---only a few had a clue about the answers to these questions. Only 3 of the Blacks in the audience knew that these items were invented by African-Americans, while the rest of the audience did not have one idea as to who invented them.
WHY MOST DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT...BLACK HISTORY:
1. Conservative Politicians have blocked funding for programs--- such as Black History courses, minority recruiting, etc. The public schools have previously done a lousy job at teaching anything about it. Even today, many schools do not observe Black History Month or the Dr. MLK Holiday. The general school curriculum across the USA is "Euro-centric"--meaning that it is primarily based upon White folks' view of history, e.g.--students learn about Napoleon, George Washington, Betsy Ross, Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Columbus, Thomas Edison, Shakespeare, etc. Seldom (if ever) do American public schools give a thorough course on Black History..or on Black achievers such as: Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Phillis Wheatley, Langston Hughes, Lewis Latimer, Dr. George Washington Carver, Garrett Morgan, etc.
2. For nearly 300 years, Black people were prohibited from receiving any type of "formal" education and were enslaved. There was a concentrated effort during Slavery to conceal any and all information about "African history & culture"--because in order to keep someone in slavery, they must be kept ignorant. After slavery ended, American public schools were segregated --based upon race. Black people were forced to attend "Black schools" --and Caucasians went to White schools. There were very few places where there was integration of the races prior the 1950s.
3. Publishers failed to print such information about Black History. Textbooks have not included very much information about black leaders, achievers, scientists, writers, artists, or other successful Black people. Even nowadays, the information that is included in most school books is very limited when it comes to Black achievers and leaders.
4. "Black Studies" and classes oriented to teaching about these topics were not included in college level curriculums until the late 1970s....and Black people had to protest and fight for these classes to be offered.
5. Most White school administrators, teachers, professors, etc. do not think that this subject is important, and thus, they do not put much emphasis upon learning anything about it. Black Americans have not had fair access to such information about their own history.

Internet book sales have increased significantly according to "BookTrends."
Over 55% of the population has purchased a book on the Internet.
According to statistical data gathered by Book Industry Study Group (BISG) the groups that will experience the largest increases over the next several years will be:
The most popular nonfiction books are - self-help, inspirational, how-to/advice (Chicken Soup for the Soul, Prayer of Jabez, Who Moved My Cheese? Self Matters, etc.)
The most popular fiction books - adult trade (traditional hardback NY Times listing) that can be a mixture of romance, mystery, horror, etc.
The popular topics - relationships, love, sex, health, wealth, fitness, parenting, business & career development
Juvenile books They have increased over 14% since 1999. This increase can be attributed to the Harry Potter phenomenon. Prior to the Potter craze, juvenile books suffered a dramatic decline due to books on CD-ROMS and computer interactive reading games.
Elementary & High school textbooks School textbooks have increased due to the demands from home schooling and pressure to keep textbooks updated in public and private schools.
College textbooks This increase has been attributed to more books with practical hands on experience and knowledge from prominent business leaders added to the college curriculum.
Religious books A major portion of the population is seeking religious answers especially after the 9/11/01, workplace and school violence activities. The success of 'Prayer of Jabez' has one of the best sellers that provide answers.
University Press books These books are published by University Presses across the country due to expansion and diversification of the books published.
Books that will experience a decline in sales will be the Adult Trade books due to slowing economy. The average consumer will typically refrain from pleasure purchases when faced with a tight economy.
Cookbooks are perennial best-sellers because they usually have multiple contributors to the recipes. Those contributors all know someone who will buy the cookbook!
